Cardiometabolic Disease

Cardiometabolic disease is a complication of increased blood glucose levels. About 85 percent of people who have type two diabetes will develop cardiometabolic disease.
The term cardiometabolic disease is used to describe a cluster of metabolic disorder which include increased abdominal adiposity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, hyperinsulinaemia and glucose intolerance. Collectively those disorders are predictive of developing life-threatening cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes commonly occur together in cardiometabolic disease.
In the early stages, cardiometabolic disease may only present with high blood pressure (hypertension) and insulin resistance.
The macrovascular and microvascular complications of cardiometabolic disease can result in damage to the heart, kidneys, peripheral nerves and the retina of the eyes. The development of ischemic heart disease, nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy can start to occur in the early stages of insulin resistance, during the prediabetes stage of the blood sugar disorder.
